24 On a larger and more complex scale these are the qualities which make for communities. The richness of community social life is a product of continuous interaction and of a collective need to solve problems, like that of conflict between individuals, which threaten to be disruptive to the collectivity. If those people who fail cannot manage to escape they pose a problem for the community. They are likely to be angry with decision makers and with the victors in competition. This means that it is not so much the closedness of communities which leads to complex, richly symbolic organizational arrangements.
We assume that boundaries exist and we outline them when describing particular cases. But we have failed to describe their characteristics in ways which are both inclusive of known cases and meaningful in terms of the theory of value creation and social process. The evolutionary suggestion is mistaken because it implies that boundaries are real rather than symbolic. It is not important that a group is situated on an island from which its members cannot escape or that it represents an ethnic tradition or a racial combination which others in a society oppress.
