A suppression of these symptoms for the purpose of being able to take part "in a more effective way" in sportive competition is highly objectionable from the medical point of view also, especially if physical effort is required. The same obtains in the use of analgetics and local anaesthetics for this purpose. (e) Thyroxine. Thyroxine, the hormone of the thyroid gland, and its derivatives have a general stimulating action on metabolism resulting in an increased combustion of glycogen, fat and other metabolites with an increase in the requirement of oxygen and an increased production of heat.
