Lawrence Lowell was chairman of the department for the next academic year after Channing's occupation of that position; in 1909, this life-long friend of Channing became President of the University. According to Morison, Channing "was on very friendly terms with Pres. '" Apparently Channing mixed with other members of the faculty rather extensively in the early years, including lunching with them regularly, but he gradually cut this from his schedule, as he did so many other things, to allow him to concentrate on his writing.
